The Bangtan Boys have will no longer grace the stage of the prestigious awards show.
On Tuesday, December 2, a reliable source from the Mnet Asian Music Awards revealed that BTS decided that they will no longer appear in the annual music awards show.
“BTS was in talks to make an appearance, but it has been decided that they will not be appearing. It will be difficult to film a performance video due to their schedule, but we are preparing a short video for their fans,” the source stated.
Because of the threat brought by the latest Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, the government of South Korea implemented a tighter border restriction for anyone entering the country. Anyone flying to the country on or after December 3 must subject themselves to self-quarantine protocols for 10 days, whether they are vaccinated or not.
BTS is in Los Angeles, California at the moment for a series of sold-out concerts and other activities. They are also scheduled to participate in the 2021 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour on Friday, December 3 (US Time). Since the 2021 MAMA happens on Saturday, December 11 (Korea Time), it will be impossible for the boys to finish the required 10-day self-quarantine after arriving in Korea.
The source also answered a question about the possible cancellation of 2021 MAMA due to the new COVID-19 restrictions. “We are keeping an eye on the situation and will inform you if there are changes,” the source added.
If the event will push through, the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards will kick off at 6 p.m. (Korea Time) on December 11. Viewers across the world can also watch the event by subscribing to livestream.
