BH Entertainment denied the involvement of actress Han Hyo Joo in an alleged tax irregularity through a statement released Tuesday, June 13.
Earlier, news outlets revealed that an irregular tax audit against the actress was conducted by the Seoul Regional Tax Office. The reports also mentioned that the authorities imposed a penalty of approximately ₩60 million to ₩70 million (between $47,000 to $55,000) for underreported taxes.
But according to BH Entertainment, “Han Hyo Joo received a regular tax audit and not a special tax audit. There were no substantial issues, omission, or any aspects that would raise suspicions of tax evasion.”
The agency also explained the reason for the difference in the tax computation. “However, in the process of investigation, a difference in the interpretation of what is subject to taxation resulted in accounting errors. A portion of the recognized costs resulted in [Han Hyo Joo] paying additional charges.”
In addition, the agency maintained that the actress always pay her taxes dutifully. They also mentioned that Han Hyo Joo even became an ambassador for the National Tax Service in 2011 and received a presidential commendation in 2014 for being an exemplary taxpayer.
“Han Hyo Joo and our agency’s actors will continue to pay taxes dutifully as principle going forward,” the agency added.
The actress is currently preparing to shoot her upcoming drama “Moving” under Disney+.
