Netflix released seven episodes of the highly-anticipated webtoon-based, genre-bending suspense thriller Mask Girl, and it is GLORIOUS.
Based on the webtoon of the same name, Mask Girl is the story of Kim Mo-Mi, an ordinary office worker by day and a live-streamer by night. Mo-mi dreamt of being a dancer, but society’s harsh standards impeded her aspirations. Mo-Mi gets to live her childhood dream by donning a mask and a new persona, Mask Girl, whose audience is tempted by her seductive dance moves.
The series captured all its readers loved about the webtoon, biting messages about lookism, unpredictable twists, and the effortless interchanging between thriller and black comedy. We see Mo-Mi in three different timelines. Three names, three lives, three murders. Go Hyun-jung and Nana play the character Kim Mo-mi. Ahn Jae-Hong plays Mo-mi’s colleague Ju Oh-Nam, who has a crush on her, and Yeom Hye-Ran plays Ju Oh-Nam’s mother.
The series is gaining traction, debuting at the top of Netflix’s charts in South Korea and Thailand and entering the top ten in other countries, according to data analytics website FlixPatrol.
The series is helmed by the Director Kim Yong-Hoon, whose feature debut, Beasts Clawing at Straws, won Special Jury Award at the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Mask Girl is definitely a must-watch series to binge this weekend.
