Several investigations are taking place to bring down illegal streaming websites. Today, the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency’s cyber team announced they’re coming for the popular illegal streaming website Noonoo TV.
The police stated they were investigating the suspect. The case is also in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and other related organizations and with foreign cooperation.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, The Alliance for Protection of Videogram (AVP), formed by Korean broadcasting companies, streaming services, movie producers, and distributors, has filed a complaint to sue Noonoo TV. AVP filed the case based on multiple failed attempts to block access to the site; Noonoo TV is still in operation, bypassing restrictions. The illegal streaming platform garnered 1.5 billion views in February 2023, far higher than legal streaming services. Highly-anticipated series The Glory gained millions of views.
AVP cited that the illegal streaming platform profits from illegal gambling site advertisements.
