After 25 years, veteran Korean actor Choi Min-Sik announces his return to the silver screen with Disney+’s newest series, “Big Bet.”

Yonhap News reported that the widely missed actor would star as Cha Moo-Sik in the epic tale of the legendary casino king in the Philippines. The man becomes saddled with several unfortunate events as he gets entangled in a murder case. The series shows how he makes the ultimate bet with his life to get back to the game.

The 59-year-old actor stated that his role as protagonist shows twists and turns in an ordinary man’s life in a good ensemble with his co-star Son Seuk-Goo. During the press conference, Cho stated, “Cha Moo-sik is just an ordinary man who obsessively pursues his desires and unconsciously falls into the world of casino. While filming the series, I learned that one’s life can unfold in a dramatic way depending on whom you meet, where you go, and what kinds of events you experience.”

This is Choi’s return to long-form storytelling in a drama series, as he appeared in dozens of movies, one of the last ones being “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” in 2014. He said, “Although movies present compact stories due to the big pressure of not going over two hours, the series gave me enough room to act what I wanted.”

Big Bet’s director Kang Yoon-Sung stated that the filming team adopted “de-aging technology.” The 3D visual effect technique is used to make an actor look younger to portray the main character’s middle years. The series hired two younger actors to play Min-Sik’s early years. Kang bragged, “The team conducted several pilot tests and extracted data to create the scenes (of his younger years), which is one of the big achievements of this series.”

Disney+ will release the first season of the highly-anticipated series on December 21, starring Choi and Son Seok-Goo. Big Bet will be a two-season show, with the first season having eight episodes. It is planned that the two-season show will have a total of 16 episodes.
