Squid Game is undoubtedly the most talked-about show of 2021. The dystopic thriller wherein cash-strapped contestants play a series of children’s games with a deadly twist truly captured the hearts of more than 142 million viewers all over the globe. Squid Game started a few trends, such as the Dalgona craze, and sparked people’s creativity by creating an alarm based on the show’s creepy doll

Many shows now want to surpass Squid Game’s success, Netflix’s My Name being one of them. This time, the media streaming giant not only continues to satiate the audience’s thirst for Kdrama but also comes up with another entry that may even surpass Squid Game.

Train to Busan continues to wow audiences, even sparking debates over a Western remake. The creator of this magnificent movie, Yeon Sang-Ho, is back with a dystopian-supernatural thriller that will make people never want to sleep again. The director worked with Choi Gyu-Seok to bring the original webtoon and create the world Hellbound. It’s highly anticipated that the webtoon is critically acclaimed and deemed the most shocking piece of work in the history of all webtoons. That is what makes it a strong competitor to Squid Game.

The world goes into chaos as monsters from Hell come to actively execute people into their realm. In these moments, a religious group named Saejinrihwe  appears to share their doctrine and “save people.” As others scramble to follow, several individuals unite to uncover the truth.

As always, Yeon Sang-Ho mirrors the dark parts of humanity, a similar theme shared with many successful shows in 2021 amid a pandemic.

The question now is, will it truly surpass Squid Game? Hellbound will premiere on Netflix on November 19, 2021.
